My company sent us on a proper workshop for the first time: three days and two nights on Jeju Island. These were the things that never happened while the budget was short, and this year we did all of them. Notes, and a few photographs.
A quiet start to the morning
We landed, and before the first item on the schedule we all sat down to watch the World Cup match together. Korea lost. Watching your side lose on the first morning of a trip quiets a group down for a while, however good the rest of the day looks on paper.
It did not last, because there was far too much to get through. This was the first workshop I have been on that ran two nights. Day trips and single nights, yes; three days, never. These were the things that always got cut from the budget, so even reading the schedule felt different.
981 Park, where the karting was the best of it
First up was 981 Park. You check in, sit through the safety briefing, and then you wait your turn.
The karting was genuinely good — the kind of good where you reach the bottom and immediately want to go back up and do it again. If I had to pick one thing as the best part of this workshop, it would be this.
The one on display is the GR-D. According to the panel it seats two and runs downhill on gravity alone, with no engine, and the back seat has the wider view.
On the way out they handed everyone a snack as a souvenir. I had not seen snacks tied up in a scarf before.
Day two: the futsal group
Day two opened with activities split by group. Each group did something different, and I was in the futsal group. It was my first time playing futsal, and I scored the first goal. Up to that point it was going very well.
The trouble started afterwards. Years of not exercising showed up all at once. A few minutes of running and I had to sit down, and the heat that day nearly finished me — I only just kept from being sick. By the end the blood vessels in my eyes had burst.
A cafe looking out at the sea
Once the activities finished, everyone regrouped at a cafe looking out at the sea. What made it was not the coffee but the seating. Outside there are loungers you can lie flat on, and lying under a parasol watching the water, you lose track of the time entirely.
The Grand Blue, and fishing off the deck
After the cafe came the Grand Blue. Walk down to the jetty and the boat is right there; you board and head straight out.
Fishing off the deck was the main event, and I did not fish. I sat on deck and watched the sea instead, and it was still good. The coastline slides past while the boat runs, and with drinks and chocolate laid out in front of you there is not much else you need to be doing.
What we ate
Hard to leave the food out of a trip to Jeju. Gogi-guksu and bibim-guksu came out together with boiled pork and dumplings. The slice of pork sitting on top of the bibim-guksu was the best of it.
We had sashimi as well. It is the sort of place where the side dishes keep arriving, so I was already fairly full before the fish reached the table.
Evenings at the lodge
Dinner over, you go back to the lodge and that is another item on the schedule. We played games, several of them. Playing games with people you normally only meet through work brings out sides of them you had not seen, and honestly that is usually what stays with you from a workshop. The karts and the yacht were both good, but counting the moments I actually remember, more of them are from the lodge.
Next year
I thought three days would feel long, and it turned out short. Doing everything that had been deferred for lack of budget all in one go probably had something to do with that.
Next year I hope we manage somewhere abroad. Failing that, Jeju again is fine. Only this time I would like it booked for a day with no national team match in the morning — and I intend to have done some exercise by then.
